Land Bank to update Flint community on property demo intiatives

FLINT, Mich. — The Genesee County Land Bank will update the community on a multimillion-dollar effort to demolish thousands of properties in Flint-area neighborhoods.

County Land Bank staff are set to do a presentation during Flint City Council’s Dec. 8, 2025, meeting. The move comes after several fires in blighted Flint homes, some of which are Land Bank properties, said Flint officials. Special Affairs Committee starts at 4:30 p.m. with the regularly scheduled Flint City Council meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. 

“One of the things that we’re also going to do Monday…Land Bank will come before us…and they will give a presentation,” Flint City Council Vice President Candice Mushatt said during a Dec. 3, 2025, Finance Committee meeting. “They are going to talk about what’s happening with the money that was given to them for demos, where they are with their demos. And if you all have any other questions that you would like to have answered. Please let one of us up here know.”

A $39.5 million-dollar investment in partnership with the City of Flint, Genesee County was announced in 2022 with $16 million from Flint’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)  dollars, $8 million from County ARPA dollars, $10 million for the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, $1 million in Community Project Funding through former Congressman Dan Kildee’s office and $4.5 million for the Land Bank and Genesee County Treasurer. 

In 2023, the Land Bank kicked off its initiative to demolish thousands of blighted properties throughout Genesee County. Then, officials estimated that there were at least 3,000 properties that needed to be demolished, mostly in Flint. 

To date, they have accumulated more than $55 million to help clear vacant properties through 2026.
