Communities First to host job fairs for Flint housing project

FLINT, Mich. — Communities First, Inc. (CFI) is putting on two job and trade fairs to connect with potential subcontractors, suppliers, and job seekers for the Orchard Lane redevelopment project.

The events are scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, 2025, and Wednesday, May 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at 1112 W. Bristol Road. CFI will collect resumes and contact information from prospective subcontractors, suppliers, and job seekers.

Open positions include general labor, site cleanup and maintenance, carpentry, carpet and flooring installation, and appliance and plumbing fixture installation. Hiring will continue over the next 90 days to meet the project’s needs.

The Orchard Lane redevelopment involves rehabilitating 45 residential units at 2545 and 2709 Orchard Lane in Flint’s Sixth Ward. CFI says the project will help create jobs and contracting opportunities for residents and small businesses.

“Flint is severely lacking affordable housing for all income levels, especially people who want to live close to work or in areas with amenities and public transit,” said Matt Bach, Community First, Inc. Director of Strategic Communications and Special Events, in an April 23, 2055 email. “Additionally, construction jobs will be created and the majority of work will be from Flint area-based contractors.”

While the Orchard Lane project won’t include new commercial space, CFI noted that nearby properties in Orchard Manor and Orchard Grove will offer commercial amenities to support surrounding residents.

The properties were selected for their location along the commercial corridor of Ballenger Highway and Flushing Road. The area is walkable and close to grocery stores, pharmacies, public transit and McLaren Hospital.

The project supports CFI’s broader goal of expanding access to quality, affordable housing in Flint and Genesee County. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Those unable to attend the job fairs can contact CFI’s Mike Wright at mwright@communitiesfirstinc.org or 810-422-5358 ext. 1003.
