Faith and fitness unite at new Flint gym

FLINT, Mich. — A new gym on the city’s west side is gaining traction not only for its workouts, but for its message of faith.

Powered by Grace, owned by Jeanetta Malone and Miquel Castillo, blends fitness with personal growth, offering a space where members are encouraged to develop both physically and spiritually.

“We started off coaching at Mayfair Bible Church, hosting free faith and fitness classes. Then we hosted our first 5K at Flushing County Park, and the turnout was amazing. From there, it just snowballed.”

Both Malone and Castillo come from fitness backgrounds, but say the business evolved as they recognized a deeper impact on the people around them.

“As we expanded in the community, more people reached out,” Castillo said. “We realized what we were offering was bigger than just fitness. It became about helping people grow mentally, emotionally and spiritually.”

The business wasn’t always known as Powered by Grace. Malone said it originally operated under the name “Jet Active,” a clothing brand that no longer reflected their mission.

“I realized we were pushing energy into things that didn’t align with what we wanted to promote,” she said. “That’s when the name ‘Powered by Grace’ came to me. We’re not just working out for physical health; we’re also stewarding our bodies, minds and spirits.”

Today, Powered by Grace hosts fitness sessions, Bible studies, social outings and community-building activities designed to support people beyond the gym floor.

“Life comes with a lot of responsibilities, and as adults, we realize we need other people,” Castillo said. “The physical transformation is small compared to what happens spiritually and emotionally when people feel seen and supported.”

The business officially launched in February 2025 and moved into its current facility in September. Malone said much of what fills the space today is the result of community support.

“A lot of what you see here, from the painted walls to the equipment, came from the hands of the community,” she said. “People donated, supported our events, and believed in our mission.”

That sense of community extends to how the gym welcomes newcomers, regardless of their beliefs.

“Everyone is welcome here,” Malone said. “We’re not going to push anything on anybody. We just want people to feel at home.”

Aside from the gym space, the business continues to host community events, including its upcoming second annual 5K run and walk on Saturday, May 16 at 9:30 a.m. This year’s event will feature local vendors, group competitions and even a best-dressed contest.

Like many small businesses, Powered by Grace has faced challenges; particularly when it comes to visibility.

“Getting our name out there has been one of the biggest hurdles,” Malone said. “But once people hear about us or come in, they’re more likely to stay connected.”

For others looking to start a similar business in Flint, Castillo emphasized purpose and perseverance.

“Have faith and stay grounded in your mission,” he said. “Things might not happen overnight, but if you stay consistent, you’ll see it come together.”

Malone added that community support can make all the difference.

“Flint is huge on community,” she said. “You have to put yourself out there. It can be scary, but that’s how people find you, and that’s how you build something meaningful.”
