Flint City Council to consider vehicles, senior center funding, ordinance changes

FLINT, Mich. — Flint City Council members are set to consider proposals to purchase new city utility vehicles, upgrade programming and operations for a major senior service center, and amend ordinances governing how vacant buildings are registered by the city.
Council members will meet May 6, 2026, to discuss several resolutions and ordinances presented to the finance, legislative and governmental operations committees before moving forward for approval by the full council. Here’s a look at what’s on the agenda:
Resolutions
Millage funding for Senior Service Center (Res. 260089.1)
This resolution calls on the council to authorize the acceptance of $54,744 in Senior Millage funding from the Genesee County Department of Senior Services to aid in programming and operation at the Eric B. Mays Senior and Community Service Center.
Purchase of a new wheel loader (Res. 260143)
The council could allow the Division of Purchases and Supplies to make the final payout on John Deere wheel loader vehicle for a price not to exceed $80,805.88. The City has been making lease payments on a wheel loader used by the Street Maintenance Division.
Extension of water control cleaning services (Res. 260144)
This resolution would allow city officials to update the purchase order with D.H.T. Transport for sludge hauling and transportation services in an amount not to exceed $305,000 for the 2026 fiscal year, with an option to extend the contract for a fourth year.
Ordinances
Changes to city holiday observances (Res. 250414.1-T)
This ordinance would add Good Friday to the list of holidays observed by the city. If approved, the holidays recognized by city staff would include:
- New Year’s Eve
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King Day
- Good Friday
- Memorial Day
- Juneteenth
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- The day after Thanksgiving
- Christmas Eve
- Christmas Day
City Council response to in-school fighting (Res. 2601330)
This ordinance aims to support school administrators in addressing incidents of school fighting by outlining definitions and potential penalties.
Registry of vacant buildings (Res. 260134)
The ordinance would require owners or occupants of vacant buildings to register those properties with the City of Flint and its Safety Inspections Department.
Zoning changes for two-family dwellings (Res. 260135)
The proposed zoning amendments aim to reduce barriers and expand housing options, particularly for two-family dwellings, within the city.
