Flint event helps community get to know the city better

FLINT, Mich. — Genesee County residents will have a chance to explore some of Flint’s most beloved attractions — for free — during this year’s “Be a Tourist in Your Hometown” event.

Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, the event invites locals to discover popular destinations, new ventures and hidden gems across the area. Participating sites include the Flint Children’s Museum, Whaley Historic House Museum and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, among others.

Hosted by Explore Flint & Genesee, a division of the Flint & Genesee Group, “Be a Tourist” caps off National Travel and Tourism Week while ushering in the festival season.

“This is a week where our destination, among many others, highlights all the reasons why we are a great place to visit,” said Amari Steward, executive director of Explore Flint & Genesee. “We want to show that spirit to our residents, as well.”

Attendees will receive a “Be a Tourist” passport and wristband, which grant free entry to all participating attractions. With support from the Mass Transportation Authority, three dedicated bus routes will run throughout the day, departing from Brush Park in downtown Flint.

Local restaurants will also offer discounts and day-of specials for attendees. Participating restaurants include Churchill’s Food & Spirits, Hoffman’s Deco Deli, Soriano’s Mexican Kitchen and XOLO Flint.

“There are so many unique places to take your friends, family and out-of-town guests in Flint & Genesee,” Steward said. “Come out and discover what’s in your hometown — you’re sure to find something you love.”

Day-of registration will be available at Brush Park and the Sloan Museum of Discovery. Although the event is free, organizers encourage residents to preregister at exploreflintandgenesee.org/BAT.

Free parking will be available in downtown Flint on the street, in the Rutherford Parking Ramp and at most participating locations. A full list of attractions and restaurant specials is available online or by following Explore Flint & Genesee on social media.
