Flint library sees surge in pantry use as shutdown continues

FLINT, Mich. — As the federal government shutdown stretches into its 36th day, its ripple effects are being felt across Flint.

In recent weeks, the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library’s Saturday Community Pantry has seen a sharp rise in the number of households it serves. Library officials link the increase to disruptions with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

“When federal resources are disrupted like SNAP we see the impact quickly. People turn to trusted public spaces. Libraries are one of the first places they come,” said Ann Manko, Interim Executive Director of the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. “Our pantry serves as a bridge to stability and access.”

On Friday, Nov. 1, U.S. Rep. Kristin McDonald Rivet visited the library for a press event highlighting food insecurity trends and the impact of federal disruptions on local communities.

The Saturday Community Pantry operates every Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. inside the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. It offers shelf-stable food items and other household essentials to families in need.
