Flint mayor puts forward $1M plan to cover GLWA rate increase
FLINT, Mich. — In response to a nearly 6 percent water rate hike approved this week by the Great Lakes Water Authority, Mayor Sheldon Neeley proposed adding $1 million to the city’s Water Stabilization Fund to offset the increase for residents.
“Flint families have carried more than their fair share of burdens,” Neeley said. “We will not allow this rate hike to be passed on to our residents. This investment reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting households and maintaining affordable water access.”
During a Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, press conference, Neeley was joined by City Council President Candice Mushatt, Finance Chair Judy Priestley and Third Ward Councilwoman LaShawn Johnson as he voiced opposition to the rate increase and support for measures to protect residents from higher costs.
If approved by the City Council, the additional funding would allow the Water Stabilization Fund to fully offset the GLWA-imposed increase through fiscal year 2028.
The city also said it will continue funding its free water filter distribution program for two years after state funding ends later this year, ensuring residents maintain access to water filters, according to a city news release.
