Genesee County Health Department advises residents to avoid Flint River

Flint, MI — The Genesee County Health Department urges residents to avoid the Flint River, including fishing and recreational activities.

According to a city press release, the health department announced on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, that the river area extending from Hamilton Ave. to Grand Traverse St. contains the oil spill.

The Flint Sewer Department was notified of an oil spill into the Flint River at noon on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Flint officials and the Genesee County HAZMAT team responded immediately, and Michigan Spill Response placed booms in three places along the river. The absorbent barriers are collecting the spilled oil.
