Long-term success: Enroll your child in a high-quality, no-cost PreK program
Research shows that children who start ahead stay ahead, and that’s why I encourage all families to learn more about PreK for All, a high-quality, no-cost initiative designed to help prepare Michigan children for success in school and life.

As the superintendent of the Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD), I’ve seen firsthand the incredible positive impact high-quality PreK can have on a child’s life whether through our Great Start Readiness Program or our Early Childhood Special Education classrooms.
Students who have participated in PreK are more engaged in classroom learning in later grades, develop strong and healthy relationships with their peers and teachers, and demonstrate resilience inside and outside the classroom.
Research confirms what we see every day: high-quality PreK education improves a child’s emotional, social and intellectual skills and helps ensure children are healthy and ready to learn when they enter kindergarten.
In fact, a child’s brain is 90% developed by the age of 5. The nurturing relationships and stimulating early childhood learning experiences in PreK build a strong foundation for future growth, development and success.
Investing in our children’s education during the early years pays dividends for decades to come. PreK teaches children critical social skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking and independence, which supports lifelong success. Children who attend PreK are more likely to graduate high school and pursue college or career training, opening doors to rewarding jobs that benefit themselves and their families.
Across GISD, we have 137 classrooms ready to welcome nearly 2,200 4-year-olds this fall. Families who are excited about this initiative are already enrolling their children. If you haven’t enrolled yet, don’t worry, there is still space available.
Participating in PreK for All can save families money on childcare at a time when the cost of living, from gas to groceries, is rising. PreK for All saves families thousands of dollars and helps kids enter kindergarten ready to learn and succeed.
Enrollment for the 2025–26 school year is now open at GISD, and I encourage every eligible family to learn more at 591kids.org. Families outside our area can easily find programs near them by visiting MiPreKforAll.org. This program is available to all children who turn 4 by Dec. 1.
This high-quality, no-cost program can help your children and children across the state of Michigan get the foundation they deserve.
