Trial dates for Flint City Councilman facing felony assault charges rescheduled

FLINT, Mich. — A jury trial for a Flint City councilman charged with domestic violence and assault has been postponed until mid-June.
Flint City Councilman Leon El-Alamin appeared before Genesee County Circuit Judge Khary Hanible Tuesday, May 20, 2026 for what was supposed to be the first day of the trial. He is charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and domestic violence.
At the hearing, Hanible rescheduled the trial by one month, with the current start date set for 9 a.m. June 17. A final pre-trial hearing for the case has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. June 15.
This marks the second time the trial date has been rescheduled this year. El-Alamin was originally set to appear before a jury March 11 before the trial was moved to the tentative May 20 start date.
The councilman’s attorneys said the new trial date was decided to avoid scheduling conflicts with another case on Hanible’s docket.
El-Alamin faces the charges stemming from an alleged incident in Mt. Morris Township on July 10, 2025. The alleged victim is the councilman’s former girlfriend and the mother of his child, according to previous court testimony.
El-Alamin was appointed to the Flint City Council after the unexpected death of the late Flint City Councilman Eric Mays. He later won the seat through an election and is serving a partial term that ends on Nov. 18, 2026.
