Flint Repertory Theatre wraps up season with musical ‘American Idiot’

FLINT, Mich. — FIM Flint Repertory Theatre will close out its season with Green Day’s “American Idiot,” the Tony Award-winning musical based on the band’s album of the same name.
Performances are scheduled to take place from May 29 to June 14, 2026, at the University of Michigan-Flint Theatre, 327 E Kearsley, Flint, Mich.
The production features music by Green Day, lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong and a book by Armstrong and Michael Mayer. Flint Rep’s production is directed by Kevin O’Callaghan, with choreography by Cy Paolantonio and Megan Krause Meyer and music direction by Leah Fox.
The musical follows Johnny and his friends as they try to escape suburban life while grappling with uncertainty, temptation and disillusionment in their quest to find purpose. The score includes songs such as “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Holiday” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
Producing Artistic Director Nicole Samsel said the themes of identity, political division and community remain relevant more than two decades after the album’s release.
“American Idiot captures the urgency, frustration, hope and disillusionment of a generation searching for meaning in a chaotic world,” Samsel said. “Bringing this explosive rock opera to Flint feels both thrilling and necessary.”
A college night performance with free admission and pizza for students with a college ID is planned for Friday, June 5. An American Sign Language-interpreted performance is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7.
Tickets are available at www.tickets.thefim.org, at FIM Ticket Center box offices at FIM Whiting Auditorium and FIM Capitol Theatre, or by calling 810-237-7333. Genesee County residents receive a 30% discount on “American Idiot” through the Genesee County Arts Education and Cultural Enrichment Millage.
