Here’s what happened at the May 26 Flint City Council meeting

FLINT, Mich. — Flint City Council members moved quickly through a light agenda Tuesday night, approving fire station renovations, park reconstruction funding and new regulations for vacant buildings despite a brief interruption caused by a fire alarm.

Here’s a rundown of what the council did during the May 26, 2026, meeting: 

Approved fire station kitchen renovations

Council members approved a number of resolutions on the consent agenda in an 8-0 vote, including a resolution approving $163,064 for renovations to kitchens #6 and #8 at the Flint Fire Station. The Flint Fire Chief and Facilities Maintenance Division requested remodeling work for these kitchens due to mold and asbestos issues.

Approved $1.2 million reconstruction efforts at St. John Street Neighborhood Memorial Park   

Council members also approved a resolution authorizing city officials to enter into an agreement with Gross Construction for site improvements and construction services at St. John Street Neighborhood Memorial Park in an amount not to exceed $1,239,000. About $1 million of the funding comes from a grant agreement between Flint and the Department of Natural Resources, which was approved by the council to be used for park improvements in April 2023. The contract for the construction was originally awarded to A/E Collaborative in March 2024, though the city canceled the agreement and reopened the bidding process due to the contractor’s “inadequate performance,” according to council documents. 

Filled vacant 4th Ward seat for Human Relations Commission 

The council approved a resolution to confirm the appointment of John Papp as the 4th Ward representative to Flint’s Human Relations Commission. Papp would fill the remainder of a vacant three-year term ending Oct. 28. 

Approved an ordinance altering city holiday observances

Council members approved an ordinance adding Good Friday to the list of holidays observed by the city as part of the consent agenda.

Approved ordinance requiring registry of vacant buildings 

Council members unanimously approved the second reading of an ordinance requiring owners of vacant buildings to register their properties with the City of Flint and its Safety Inspections Department.
