LaShawn Johnson has called for a recount after finishing just three votes behind Beverly Biggs-Leavy and A.C. Dumas in a special election for Flint’s Third Ward City Council seat on May 6, 2025.

FLINT, Mich. — A candidate in Flint’s Third Ward City Council race has requested a recount after finishing just three votes behind two opponents who tied for first place in the May 6, 2025 special election.

LaShawn Johnson received 162 votes, while Beverly Biggs-Leavy and A.C. Dumas each garnered 165, according to unofficial results

“I’m asking for a recount just to make sure nothing was missed, but I have the utmost respect for the judicial process,” said Johnson.

Dumas said that Johnson is “within her right to file for a recount according to Michigan Election Law” while also noting that he does not think the results will change.

The recount will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 22, in the basement of the Genesee County Administration Building.

The Third Ward seat became vacant after Councilmember Quincy Murphy died in September 2024. Murphy was in the middle of a term set to expire in November 2026. After his death, the City Council failed to appoint a replacement.

The winner of the primary will advance to the Aug. 5 general election to compete to serve the remainder of Murphy’s term.
