FLINT, Mich. — Photographer Ayana V. Jackson is set to visit Flint for an Artist Talk hosted by MW Gallery.

The free, public event will take place Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the gallery, located at 815 S. Saginaw St.

Jackson is known for using photography to examine the legacy of colonial image-making and its ongoing impact on perceptions of race, gender, and the Black body.

Her work often draws on historical archives, re-staging 19th- and early 20th-century portraiture in order to question the narratives embedded in those images. She frequently casts herself in her photographs to reinterpret and reclaim visual representations of Black figures in history.

Originally from East Orange, New Jersey, Jackson lives and works between Brooklyn, N.Y., and Johannesburg, South Africa. Her photographs are held in several prominent collections, including The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Newark Museum, Princeton University Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia.

Her talk coincides with “Figuratively Speaking,” MW Gallery’s current group exhibition featuring two of Jackson’s works. On view through August 23, the show focuses on how artists use the human form to explore identity, emotion, and social commentary.
