FLINT, Mich. — With no clear end in sight for the federal government shutdown, the City of Flint is planning to offer assistance to residents at risk of losing access to critical resources.

According to an Oct. 28, 2025, press release, the city has partnered with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan to launch a food voucher program for Flint residents who are federal employees or SNAP recipients affected by the government shutdown.

Starting Nov. 1, eligible residents will be able to receive vouchers redeemable for a 30-pound box of food from the Food Bank. Each qualifying household can receive up to two vouchers per month as part of the city’s emergency response effort.

“Flint families and federal workers shouldn’t have to worry about putting food on the table because of circumstances beyond their control,” said Mayor Sheldon Neeley. “The City of Flint is committed to standing with our residents and ensuring no family goes hungry during this federal shutdown. We’re deeply grateful to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan for partnering with us once again to meet this critical community need.”

The initiative aims to assist both SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) recipients and federal employees whose benefits or paychecks could be disrupted during the shutdown.

To qualify, residents must provide:

  • Proof of current SNAP benefits and Flint residency, or
  • Proof of federal employment and Flint residency.

Eligible residents can visit Flint City Hall to receive food vouchers.

City officials said more details about the program will be announced next week.
