FLINT, Mich. — Flint Northern High School and a professional golfer are among the Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame’s (GFAASHOF) 2026 inductees.

In 1995, Flint Northern became the first Michigan high school to have three Class A varsity teams — boys basketball, girls basketball and boys wrestling — win state championships in the same year.

A decade later, Willie Mack III, a Grand Blanc High School graduate, began garnering attention on the golf course by winning numerous matches and tournaments. In 2006, he captured the American Junior Golf Association’s Buick Junior Golf Tournament title and later became the first African American to win the Michigan Amateur in 2011. He currently competes professionally.

The complete roster of the 2026 class of inductees:

  • Latanga Cox  – Basketball, Flint Northwestern H.S., 1980

The GFAASHOF also announced a partnership with Flint Community Schools to provide financial support to the district’s athletic program.

“Flint Community Schools have been a powerhouse in Michigan high school athletics over the years, with many of its student-athletes moving on to outstanding careers at the college and professional levels,” said GFAASHOF President Anthony Alexander. “Moreover, the vast majority of our Hall of Fame members made their names on the fields and courts of Flint high schools.”

The 40th annual Induction Ceremony & Dinner will take place March 22 at the Genesys Banquet & Conference Center in Grand Blanc Township.

The event begins at 4 p.m. Tickets are $50, with proceeds benefiting the GFAASHOF scholarship fund and the Flint Community Schools athletics department.
