Flint City Council elects new leadership
FLINT, Mich. — Flint City Council has selected new leadership.
During its meeting Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, council members voted to elect Seventh Ward Councilwoman Candice Mushatt as council president. Mushatt previously served as vice president.
Immediately following the vote, Mushatt stepped into her role as council president by formally calling the meeting to order.
“I first want to say thank you so much to my colleagues for giving me the opportunity to serve as the president,” Mushatt said. “I am committed to doing better on this council and making sure there are nine clear voices, and when we have to be, one voice of unity.”
The council also filled other leadership positions during the Monday evening meeting. Jonathan Jarrett was elected vice president of the City Council. Councilwoman Judy Priestley will remain chair of the Finance Committee, Councilman Dennis Pfeiffer will chair the Government Operations Committee, and Leon El-Alamin was appointed as the legislative chair.
Before adjourning the meeting, Mushatt acknowledged former council president Ladel Lewis and thanked her for her service.
