FLINT, Mich. — Flint Community Schools is inviting families and community members to celebrate reading at its annual A Taste of Literacy event.
The free, family-friendly event takes place from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at the Flint Farmers’ Market.
A Taste of Literacy serves as a kickoff to March is Reading Month and aims to encourage students and families to celebrate reading throughout the month.
“Our goal is to empower families with the tools and confidence they need to support their child’s literacy journey,” said Kevelin Jones, superintendent of Flint Community Schools. “A Taste of Literacy celebrates the joy of reading while strengthening the partnership between our schools, families, and community.”
Featured activities include a live performance by Jeff the Magician, make-and-take storytelling activities with Master Storyteller Shani Womack, interactive literacy games led by educators and community partners, and complimentary Market Bucks for the first 500 attendees. The event will also include raffles, free books and character appearances.
“A Taste of Literacy is about creating joyful, meaningful experiences that connect families with literacy in memorable ways,” said DeLynn Smith, curriculum development specialist in humanities. “Through storytelling, hands-on activities, and community engagement, we hope to inspire students and families to see themselves as lifelong readers and learners.”
