Flint councilman keeps his seat, new representation for Congress

Flint, MI – Leon El-Alamin will continue to serve on the Flint City Council after defeating his opponent by a small margin.

“I’m super…excited to continue to roll up my sleeves and continue to do the work for the residents,” said El-Alamin. “I want to thank the residents first and foremost for their continuous support in my leadership.”

El-Alamin’s rival and former Flint Board of Education member, Carol McIntosh, lost by 108 votes. He will serve the remainder of the partial term until Nov. 18, 2026 – when the late Eric Mays’ term would have ended. El-Alamin was appointed as first ward councilman following Mays’ death in February 2024.

On a state level, Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet beat Republican opponent Paul Junge, securing her position as Michigan’s 8th District Congressman. She will replace incumbent Dan Kildee, who was elected to Congress in 2012.

“I congratulate my successor, Congresswoman-elect Kristen McDonald Rivet. She is a pragmatic leader who will bring real leadership for mid-Michigan families in Congress,” said Congressman Dan Kildee in a Nov. 6, 2024 statement. “I know that she will bring a similar approach to bipartisanship and governing that I have always tried to bring to the U.S. House of Representatives.”
