City officials respond to oil spill in Flint River

Flint, MI — The Flint Sewer Department was notified of an oil spill into the Flint River at noon on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

According to a city press release, the spill occurred at the James P. Cole Boulevard and Merrill Street outfall on the west side of the river.

The city responded immediately, and Michigan Spill placed booms in three places along the river. The absorbent barriers are collecting the spilled oil.

The Michigan Department of Environmental, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is working with the city to investigate the possible source of the spill because the amount of oil in the river is unknown.
