FLINT, Mich. — The City of Flint has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Michigan Department of Treasury to boost recruitment, retention and professional development for the city’s police officers and firefighters.
According to a Oct. 10, 2025 press release, the funding was approved through the state’s Revenue Sharing and Grants Division and will be available through fiscal year 2028.
City officials anticipate improved recruitment, stronger retention and higher morale among public safety staff. The grant also aims to support building community trust and ensuring efficient, effective emergency response.
Planned Use of Funds includes:
- Sign-On Bonuses: Attract qualified and dedicated police and fire candidates.
- Retention Bonuses: Maintain experienced personnel and reduce turnover costs.
- Performance-Based Incentives: Reward excellence in service and accountability.
- Professional Development: Enhance leadership, crisis management and operational preparedness.
- Technology Upgrades: Implement modern timekeeping software to improve workforce tracking.
