FLINT, Mich. — FIM Flint Repertory Theatre has named Nicole Samsel as its new producing artistic director, solidifying her leadership role after a year of serving in an interim capacity.

Samsel, who also held the role of managing director, led the professional theatre company through a period of growth marked by expanded community engagement, educational programming and new artistic initiatives. Her appointment was announced by Flint Institute of Music (FIM), which oversees Flint Rep.

“Nicole has played a significant role in Flint Rep’s past awards and successes and, more recently, has led with confidence, creativity, and a deep commitment to this community,” said FIM President and CEO Rodney Lontine in a statement. “Her steady leadership and compelling vision are helping shape a strong future for Flint Rep.”

During her interim year, Samsel helped plan the current season at the University of Michigan–Flint Theatre in collaboration with the UM-Flint School of Music, Theatre & Dance. The season includes a joint performance featuring Flint Rep artists and UM-Flint theatre students. One of the upcoming productions, “Lucky Stiff,” is scheduled to premiere in March.

Samsel also launched Flint Rep on the Road, a touring initiative designed to bring professional theatre into schools, senior centers and other community spaces. The program debuted with a two-week run of “The Birds” in October and November 2025 and is set to return for another run this February.

Additional initiatives introduced during her interim leadership include the return of Flint Rep’s New Works Festival, highlighting new plays and emerging voices, and the debut of the Ghost Light Cabaret series in the Elgood Theatre lobby. The cabaret series quickly gained popularity, leading to additional performances after multiple sold-out shows.

“I’m deeply grateful for the trust placed in me and excited to continue this work with such an inspiring group of artists, partners and supporters,” Samsel said in a statement. “Over the past year, we’ve seen what’s possible when we invest in collaboration, education and bold artistic work.”
