GISD and UM-Flint to host math and data science events

FLINT, Mich. — The Genesee Intermediate School District and University of Michigan-Flint will host two events focused on mathematics, data science and career-connected learning on May 29, 2026.

The Michigan Math & Data Summit Leadership Conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Riverfront Conference Center in Flint. The event will bring together educators, administrators and policymakers from across the state to discuss math education, data science and workforce preparation.

Featured speakers include Jo Boaler, Emmanuel Schanzer, Hannah Weisman and Rashell Bowerman.

Data Science Day will also be held May 29 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Murchie Science Building on the UM-Flint campus. The free event is open to high school students across Michigan and will feature hands-on activities focused on careers involving math, data and problem-solving skills, including manufacturing and artificial intelligence.

Students will also hear from Dr. Bobby Mukkamala about the role of data and critical thinking in healthcare and other careers.
