FLINT, Mich. — Flint Beat is seeking freelance writers to contribute stories focused on arts and culture, Flint neighborhoods, community issues, and local events. This role is ideal for journalists and writers who know Flint, care about our community, and want to help document the life of the city through accurate, thoughtful, and community-driven reporting.

What You’ll Cover
Freelance writers may pitch and report stories in areas including, but not limited to:
- Arts & Culture: Local artists, musicians, creatives, cultural institutions, festivals, and exhibitions
- Neighborhoods: Block-level stories, neighborhood organizations, residents, and community history
- Community & Events: Community meetings, grassroots efforts, nonprofit initiatives, and local happenings
- Local Voices: Profiles and stories that center Flint residents and community leaders
Responsibilities
- Pitch original story ideas relevant to Flint and Genesee County
- Report, interview sources, and write accurate, engaging stories
- Meet assigned deadlines
- Follow AP style and Flint Beat’s editorial guidelines
- Revise stories as needed based on editor feedback
Preferred Qualifications
- Journalism, writing, or reporting experience (professional, freelance, student, or community media)
- Strong writing and reporting skills
- Familiarity with Flint and Genesee County
- Ability to work independently and communicate clearly with editors
- Photography, video, or multimedia skills are a plus but not required
Compensation
- Paid per story, based on length, complexity, and reporting required
- Rates will be discussed prior to assignment
