FLINT, Mich. — As the federal government shutdown stretches into its 36th day, its ripple effects are being felt across Flint.

In recent weeks, the Gloria Coles Flint Public Libraryโ€™s Saturday Community Pantry has seen a sharp rise in the number of households it serves. Library officials link the increase to disruptions with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

โ€œWhen federal resources are disrupted like SNAP we see the impact quickly. People turn to trusted public spaces. Libraries are one of the first places they come,โ€ said Ann Manko, Interim Executive Director of the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. โ€œOur pantry serves as a bridge to stability and access.”

On Friday, Nov. 1, U.S. Rep. Kristin McDonald Rivet visited the library for a press event highlighting food insecurity trends and the impact of federal disruptions on local communities.

The Saturday Community Pantry operates every Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. inside the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library. It offers shelf-stable food items and other household essentials to families in need.
