Hearing set for Flint City Councilman facing felony assault charges

FLINT, Mich. — Flint First Ward City Councilman Leon El-Alamin is scheduled to appear for a hearing at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

According to Genesee County 67th District Court records, El-Alamin faces charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and domestic violence stemming from an alleged incident in Mt. Morris Township on July 10.

El-Alamin’s bond was set at $7,500 on Wednesday, July 16.

The M.A.D.E. Institute founder was appointed to the Flint City Council after the unexpected death of the late Flint City Councilman Eric Mays. El-Alamin later won his seat through an election and is serving a partial term that ends on Nov. 18, 2026.

On July 14, El-Alamin told Flint Beat that he is forwarding all comments to his attorney, but did say he is not guilty.

Flint City Councilwoman Jerri Winfrey-Carter called for his removal from the Flint City Council in a July 14 statement.

“I am beyond disgusted by the news that Flint City Councilman Leon El-Alamin has been charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm and domestic violence,” she wrote. “He needs to be removed from his seat immediately.”

El-Alamin’s attorneys were unavailable for comment at press time.
