Local nonprofit to provide free winter coats, essentials to Flint-area families

FLINT, Mich. — Uma Strong Marshall Outreach (USMO) is set to give coats to Flint families during their 11th Annual “Warming Bodies Through Love” winter initiative.

Each year, the organization has distributed free winter coats, gloves, hats and socks to families throughout Genesee County. This year’s event will be on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, from 1 to 3 p.m. at River Park Townhomes, 7002 Pemberton Drive in Flint.

“For more than a decade, USMO has been committed to supporting our community with compassion and consistency,” said Dominique Strong, Founder and Executive Director of USMO. “Warming Bodies Through Love is more than a coat drive—it’s a reminder to our families that they are valued, supported, and not alone during the coldest months of the year.”

USMO anticipates serving hundreds of families through this year’s distribution.

Families attending the distribution will receive new winter coats and essential winter gear. The event is first-come, first-served while supplies last, and children must be present to receive winter gear.

USMO is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth and families in the Greater Flint Area by improving literacy, increasing access to technology, fostering community engagement, and supporting basic needs.
