What’s Happening Flint: Black History Month events around town

FLINT, Mich. — Black History Month is underway, and Flint residents have several opportunities to celebrate by way of art, performances, lectures and community gatherings. Throughout February, local organizations across Genesee County are creating spaces to learn and reflect while honoring the history and contributions of Black Americans. Here’s a look at the Black History Month events happening around town.

Art, Festivals & Performances

African American Art from the Key Collection — Feb. 1–Apr. 26

Where: Flint Institute of Arts Museum + Art School, 1120 E. Kearsley St.
Explore more than 80 works celebrating Black artists and stories from the Eric Key Collection. The exhibition features a wide range of media and reflects histories of resilience and identity.

Tapology’s 24th Annual Tap Dance Festival — Feb. 5–8

Where: Various locations in Flint’s Cultural Center District
Tapology’s festival honors tap dance as a Black art form with performances, classes, and a closing concert celebrating rhythm and artistic heritage.

The MoTown Story — Feb. 6–28

Where: The New McCree Theatre, 4601 Clio Rd.
A musical tribute to the legacy of Motown Records, tracing its history and cultural impact through music and performance across its golden era.

Black Violin — Feb. 13 (8 p.m.)

Where: FIM Capitol Theatre, 140 E. 2nd St.
Blending classical strings with modern beats, Black Violin returns with their genre-defying performance that bridges cultures and art forms.

Flint School of Performing Arts Celebrates Black History — Feb. 20 (7 p.m.)

Where: Flint School of Performing Arts, 1025 E. Kearsley St.
A family-friendly performance showcase featuring student dance, music, theatre and spoken word that honors Black contributions to the arts.

Community Gatherings & Celebrations

25th Annual Black History Month Brunch — Feb. 7 (10 a.m.)

Where: Genesys Conference & Banquet Center, 805 Health Park Blvd., Grand Blanc
This longstanding community brunch celebrates Black achievement and community leadership. Honorees receive awards for excellence and partnership in progress.

Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Announcement — Feb. 10 (5:30 p.m.)

Where: Gloria Coles Flint Public Library, 1026 E. Kearsley St. 
The annual press conference announces and honors the newest inductees into the local African American Sports Hall of Fame.

Educational & Community Conversations

Black History Month at Flint Children’s Museum — Feb. 11–28 (10 a.m.–4 p.m.)

Where: Flint Children’s Museum, 1602 University Ave.
Celebrate Black History Month with hands-on activities and exhibits designed for kids and families. The museum’s programming includes STEM challenges inspired by Black inventors, positivity pillars, storytelling and creative play that highlights Black history heroes and contributions.

Race, Redlining & Razing: Free Community Lecture — Feb. 12 (5:30–7 p.m.)

Where: Sloan Museum of Discovery History Gallery, 1221 E. Kearsley St.
Join an interactive lecture and panel discussion on housing discrimination and the racial wealth gap. Reservations are recommended.
